P.R.E.P. Handbook 2015-2016

What is P.R.E.P.?

P.R.E.P. is our religious education program for all children of the parish in grades 1-6 who do not attend Catholic school. Through this program, our young people learn from qualified catechists the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Catechism is composed of four parts: (1) the Creed, (2) the Sacraments, (3) Life in Christ (morality/human dignity), and (4) Prayer. By attending P.R.E.P., children learn the fundamental teachings of the Catholic faith, the 'how' of practicing and living the faith, how to prepare for the first reception of sacraments (First Penance, First Holy Communion, Confirmation) and the importance of continuing a life of prayerful discipleship in the Church.

Our faith teaches us, however, that parents are the primary educators of their children. This refers to not only academics, but also lessons in faith and life. Parents provide the most concrete, everyday model and witness to their children in demonstrating how to be not only successful laborers of the world, but more importantly, how to be committed, virtuous Catholics. With that in mind, we strongly encourage parents to enroll children in our P.R.E.P. program so that they can be provided with a valuable opportunity to learn the catechism, prepare for the sacraments, and form new friendships. We ask that as your children progress through this program, you, as parents, will take a leading role as their daily catechists and models of faith throughout the entire week. This leadership role includes going through the assigned chapters of the activity book together each week with your children, teaching your children how and why to pray, bringing your children to Mass, and showing your children how to practice the Commandments in daily life. Without this parental witness and guidance, our efforts in the P.R.E.P. program would not be successful.  Thank you.
